It’s now 2014, and if your school is still relying on email (or worse still, printed) newsletters, and your website as the primary communication channel with parents, then you’re already behind the times. Many forward thinking schools are already actively using social media to create more engaging content with their school community. Here’s my top 5 reasons why your school needs a Facebook page:
1. Create a conversation – that means it needs to go 2 ways! Social media, like Facebook, allows you to post the same content you would otherwise have in your newsletters, but also encourages your school community to comment and ask questions about what’s going on at the school.
2. Get Visual – The beauty of posting to a Facebook page is the wide variety of formats you can post in. Upload a video of a school performance, images from school excursions, start a poll or competition. The opportunities are endless – far more flexible that what you can insert into a newsletter template!
3. Broaden your school community – Let’s face it – a weekly newsletter is primarily sent out to parents, however there are opportunities to increase this reach by allowing content to be accessible via a Facebook page to the student’s grandparents, other family members, and those in your local community who are also very interested in following what’s happening with the school.
4. Create unique Facebook pages for school events – They are are great way to promote an upcoming social or fundraising event at the school. You can get sponsors involved on the page, and market this out via your fan base (those who have “liked” your page) to increase awareness. You can also allow roving reporters at the events permission to upload comments and photos directly to the page via their mobile phones!
5. It’s free! – It’s not often that you can get things for free – so there is no risk involved. You have one of the most sophisticated online marketing tools at your fingertips, which provides fabulous reporting, and valuable insights into your local community.
